On Pentecost we have received the gift of the Holy Spirit. God does not leave us comfortless. And we are called to both intercession and advocacy.

God of life and peace,

Today we remember the faithfully departed veterans who loved the cause of freedom and sacrificed their lives for this purpose; through Jesus Christ our risen Savior, may they know the peace and joy of your eternal kingdom.

We pray for families who have lost loved ones in military service, who share in this sacrifice, who continue to grieve. We thank military chaplains, who extend the ministry of the church with these families.

And as we remember, may we have the courage to discern the justice and necessity of war, for only then will we honor the sacred worth of those who serve, and indeed the image of God that is in every person across this world that you have created.

On this day, you do not leave us comfortless; you have given us your Holy Spirit. May we know the peace that surpasses understanding, and may we advocate for the increase of peace, and the end of violence.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
