Early Wildflowers: Bloodroot, Wild Ginger and Ostrich Fern

The first wave of migrant songbirds has traveled through central Minnesota. Due to cooler weather and north winds this spring, many of these “early birds” lingered providing lots of opportunities to see them.

Yellow-rumped Warblers were very abundant this year in my backyard.
Also in large numbers this spring - feeding in the yard - were White-throated Sparrows

In addition to the flashes of color from the birds, the forest floor also comes alive this time of year. My early-season wildflowers put on a red, white and blue display.

Virginia Bluebells

And let the nesting season begin…..

Male Wood Duck watching his mate check out the trees for nesting cavities.
Black-capped Chickadee gathering up pet fur for its nest.
A tom turkey is quite the specimen with its big chest, long beard and sharp spurs.

Now on to the second wave of migrants - just starting to arrive this week are hummingbirds and orioles…

I heard an oriole yesterday but have yet to see one at my feeders.
