Substantially higher temperatures locked in for millennia, alongside rising sea levels that will ultimately submerge every coastal community, ensure that we are heading for grim times. But is our species actually facing the prospect of extinction? Wiping out eight billion plus individuals is not easy, and even during times when there were far fewer humans on the planet, we still managed to muddle through shocks that threatened the existence of the species.
