The solid Earth beneath our feet – which we know as the Geosphere – is not as solid as we like to think. Every year, somewhere or other, it is torn apart by volcanic blasts and shaken or sliced open by earthquake activity on tectonic faults. In addition, at a scale usually only detectable with instrumentation, it is constantly deforming in response to changing tectonic stress patterns in the crust, and to environmental changes, such as ice mass loss and rising sea level. As anthropogenic emissions continue to drive up the global temperature and accelerate climate breakdown, the solidity of our planet’s crust is becoming even less dependable.
