The unprecedented heat and humidity that has gripped the UK and Europe this week has done wonders to focus minds, and even those who have long turned away from all talk of global heating and climate breakdown, are beginning to wonder if all is not as it should be. In the UK, the five hottest days have happened in the last seven years, and temperatures this week were up to 12°C higher than they should be for June – the temperature record for the month having been broken three times in as many days. Across the Channel, Europe is experiencing its worst heatwave on record – one that, in the absence of global heating, would have been impossible just 50 years ago.
