Stream It This Week: TV Premieres August 10–16, 2026

When I started Stream It This Week back in January, I knew there would be some seasons (particularly summer) when there would be little new TV worth writing about—I just expected it to arrive sooner than August 10. That said, the week isn’t all that bad: Lanterns, HBO’s new DC Universe series, looks fantastic; there’s a director’s cut of The X-Files: I Want to Believe that can only be an improvement; and I’ll never complain about a fresh standup special from Rory Scovel. Michael (Starz) Movie streaming premiere: The fluffy Michael Jackson biopic Michael didn’t go over well with movie critics or MJ detractors earlier in 2026, but it made $1 billion at the box office, so … redemption? Not even close, but Michael was never going to go any deeper than similar historically “fluid” music bios like Bohemian Rhapsody or Back to Black—it’s a popcorn crowd-pleaser, and a mostly effective one, at that. Besides, Michael only covers the King of Pop’s 1960s origins with the Jackson 5 up to 1988’s Bad album and subsequent world tour; the purported sequel will supposedly tackle the scandalous years of Neverland Ranch. Conversations With a Killer: The Charles Manson Tapes (Netflix) New docuseries: Last month, Hulu released My Grandfather Charles Manson, and now Netflix brings us Conversations With a Killer: The Charles Manson Tapes, featuring “previously unreleased prison calls, firsthand accounts, and archival footage shedding chilling insight into the mind of a cold-blooded criminal.” It’s Hot Manson Summer. Reacher (Prime Video) Season 4 premiere: The fourth season of Prime Video’s biggest show pits Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) against one of the Lee Childs book series’ biggest villains, Lila Hoth (Agnez Mo). There’s plenty more going on in this new, action-packed Reacher season, according to a recent Toronto Sun article, but I couldn’t finish it after Ritchson referred to filming fight scenes as “the funnest thing.” I refuse to let the non-word “funnest” to take deeper root than it already has in what’s left of our mutilized language. The 2026 Patriot Games (ABC) Special: Trumpy the Clown’s Hunger Games are finally here, with teen boy and girl competitors from each U.S. state facing off in intellectual bouts of … dodgeball? Mortal combat? Who knows? Independent journalist Aaron Parnas of The Parnas Perspective has reported that the mostly home- or Christian-schooled contestants are pretty much all white and MAGA-friendly, and not necessarily residents of their claimed home states. Lying? In a Trump-sanctioned event? No way. Let’s just hope that Dear Leader shows up to slur and weave through a three-hour speech before the winners are forced to concede their trophies to him. The X-Files: I Want to Believe—Vrach Frankenshteyn (Hulu) Movie (re)premiere: The 2008 X-Files movie I Want to Believe gets the Director’s Cut treatment from Chris Carter, restoring horror elements that were removed from the original to facilitate a PG-13 rating back in ye olde IRL theater days. Says Hulu, “This R-rated version represents the film Chris always envisioned—a darker, frightening thriller exploring a real-life Dr. Frankenstein. The restoration gives fans the chance to experience a side of the film that has never been seen before.” The previous, unthrilling I Want to Believe is also available to stream on Hulu, if you’re into contrasting and comparing. Lanterns (HBO, HBO Max) New series: Is the DC Universe finally going to do right by a live-action Green Lantern? Taking “Green” out of the title worked for Arrow once upon a time, so the outlook is optimistic. Lanterns comes from Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), Chris Mundy (Ozark), and veteran comic book writer Tom King (he created Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but don’t blame him for the Supergirl movie), and follows the Green Lantern Corps organization of intergalactic peacekeepers, hence the plural Lanterns. While Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) is coaching John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) to become a Green Lantern, the pair happen upon Very Bad Things happening in Nebraska, setting off the superhero action amongst the cornfields. Lanterns’ stacked cast also includes Nathan Fillion, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Paul Ben-Victor, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, and Laura Linney; one (yes, just one) of eight episodes premieres on August 16.
