1. Have a movie marathon in bed

This isn’t just “watch a movie.” This is a full experience.

Get your favorite blankets. Pile up pillows. Make it a nest. Get snacks - the good ones. Popcorn. Candy. Fruit. Whatever makes you happy.

Turn off your phone (or at least silence it). Close the curtains if it’s daytime (well, that's how I like mine). Create an environment where the only thing that exists is you, your bed, and the screen.

Pick movies that make you feel something - comfort movies you’ve seen a hundred times, or new ones you’ve been meaning to watch. One movie? Go for it. Three movies? Even better. Make it a whole event.

The beauty is that it costs nothing. You’re already home. You already have blankets. But it feels luxurious because you’re treating it like it is.

And honestly, some of the best days are the ones where you don’t leave your bed. There’s something healing about giving yourself permission to just… exist in comfort.

2. Go on a random walk and explore your neighborhood

Take a route you’ve never taken. Turn down streets you usually pass. Notice things. The way light hits buildings.

Interesting shops. Hidden gardens. That café you always drove past but never visited.

Bring your phone and take photos of things that make you smile. The graffiti that’s actually beautiful. The flowers in someone’s garden. A cat sitting in a window. A street sign that’s funny.

Stop somewhere. Sit on a bench. Watch people. Get a drink from somewhere new. Talk to a vendor. Have a small adventure.

The magic of this is that you’re not trying to “do” anything. You’re just exploring. And exploration feels like adventure even in your own neighborhood. You might find your new favorite spot. You might meet someone interesting. You might just feel alive in a way you forgot you could feel.

It costs nothing. It’s good for your physical health. It’s good for your mental health. And it reminds you that there’s a whole world right outside your door that you’ve been walking past without seeing.

3. Cook or bake something you’ve never made before

Pick something that sounds good. Something you’ve always wanted to try but never made.

YouTube is your friend. Search the recipe. Watch someone make it. Gather your ingredients (most things you probably already have at home).

And then make it. Follow the steps. Get messy. Probably mess up a little. That’s fine.

The magic isn’t necessarily in the final product (though it might be delicious). The magic is in the process. In creating something with your own hands. In learning that you CAN do something you’ve never done before.

Even if it’s terrible, you tried something new. You learned.

You grew a little bit.

And if it turns out good? You’ve got a new skill. A new recipe you can make again. A sense of accomplishment that comes from making something from scratch.

Cooking is therapeutic. It engages your senses. It requires presence. And at the end, you get to eat something you made yourself. There’s pride in that.

4. Have a themed game night with friends

Pick a theme. “90s night” with snacks and games from that era. “Fancy night” where everyone dresses up. “Around the world," where you play games from different countries.

Play board games. Card games. Charades. Trivia. Video games. Whatever makes you all laugh.

Make it competitive. Make stakes. Loser buys coffee next time. The winner gets to pick the movie. Keep score. Get dramatic about it.

Stock snacks. Make drinks. Create an atmosphere where the only goal is to have fun together.

Games make people silly. They create moments where you laugh so hard you can’t breathe. They create inside jokes.

They bring people together.

And it costs almost nothing. Games you probably already own. Snacks you have at home. The entertainment value is insane compared to the cost.

This is the kind of night you’ll remember. Not because it was fancy or expensive. But because you were present with people you care about and you laughed.

5. Start a journal or write random things

Write whatever comes to your mind. Rants about people who annoy you. Lists of things you want to do. Dreams you’ve had. Conversations you wish you’d had. Things that made you angry. Things that made you laugh. Random thoughts at night.

No rules. No judgment. Just you and a page.

Writing is therapeutic. It gets things out of your head and onto paper. It helps you process emotions. It helps you understand yourself better.

And you don’t need fancy supplies. A notebook costs 300 naira and a pen you probably already have.

Some of the best writing happens when you’re not trying to be good. When you’re just being honest. When you’re just letting it flow.

Start a journal. Not necessarily for Instagram. Not to be poetic. Just for you. To know yourself better. To remember how you felt. To process what’s happening in your life.

6. Listen to a new podcast or audiobook series

Find something that sounds interesting. True crime.

Comedy. Educational. Storytelling. Paranormal. Anything.

Download a free app. Use your library card (many have free podcast apps). And just… listen.

While you’re cooking. While you’re walking. While you’re doing dishes. While you’re lying in bed. While you’re getting ready.

Get invested in a series. Fall down the rabbit hole. Become obsessed with a story or a topic.

Podcasts are free entertainment. Hours and hours of content created by people who are passionate about their topics. You learn things. You laugh. You get scared. You get inspired.

And the beauty is that it doesn’t require your full attention.

You can do other things while listening. But you’re still being entertained. Still learning. Still engaged.

Find a podcast that hooks you, and you’ll have entertainment for weeks or months.

7. Create a playlist and have a dance party in your room

Put on music you love. Music that actually makes you feel something.

Close your door (or don’t, I’m not a cop). Turn it up. And dance.

Alone in your room. With friends. Doesn’t matter.

Dance like nobody’s watching because nobody IS watching (or if they are, who cares?).

Move your body. Feel the music. Let it move you. Sing. Jump.

Spin. Be ridiculous.

Dancing releases endorphins. It’s physical activity that doesn’t feel like exercise. It’s pure joy.

And it costs nothing. You have music. You have a room.

That’s all you need.

Some of the best moments are the quiet ones where you’re alone with music that makes your heart feel alive. Where you remember what it feels like to be free and unselfconscious.

Put on a playlist. Dance. Feel better.

8. Visit a museum or art gallery

Many have free or discounted hours. Look them up. Plan it.

Walk around slowly. Look at art. Read the plaques. Take your time with pieces that speak to you.

Pretend to understand abstract art while nodding thoughtfully. 😂 It's fun; don’t worry about being “cultured.”

Art is subjective. You don’t need to understand it to enjoy it.

You just need to feel it.

Museums and galleries are peaceful. They’re spaces where you can slow down. Where you can think. Where you can be inspired.

Some museums have free admission days. Some have “pay what you wish” hours. Check your local ones. You might be surprised at how affordable culture can be.

And even if you don’t understand everything, you’ll have spent time in a space that’s different from your normal routine. You’ll have seen things that make you think or feel.

You’ll have given yourself permission to exist in a more thoughtful way.

9. Have a photoshoot (for no reason)

Get dressed. Do your hair. Do your makeup if you want.

Find somewhere pretty. Your room. A park. A street with good light. Anywhere.

Take photos of yourself. Lots of them. Selfies. Full body shots.

You laughing. You serious. You being silly.

Not to post anywhere. But for you.

To feel cute. To have memories. To practice loving yourself.

To see yourself the way others see you.

Photography is an art. Learning what angles work for you.

What lighting makes you feel good. What poses make you feel confident.

It’s a form of self-love. It’s saying “I deserve to be photographed. I deserve to see myself looking good.”

And when you look back at the photos later, you’ll smile.

You’ll remember how you felt. You’ll have tangible proof that you were there, you were alive, you were beautiful.

10. Call someone and have a real conversation

Call someone you care about. Someone you haven’t talked to in a while. A friend. A family member. Someone who makes you feel good.

Talk about nothing and everything. Ask them how they really are (not the surface answer, the real answer). Tell them what’s going on with you. Share something that made you laugh. Share something that scared you.

Listen. Actually listen. Not while scrolling. Not while doing other things. Just listen.

The magic of voice calls is that you can hear emotion. You can pick up on tone. You can laugh together in real time.

You can have a conversation that feels like sitting in the same room.

Text has replaced voice calls. We’ve forgotten how intimate a real conversation can be.

Make time for this. Call someone. Have a real conversation.

Remember why you loved talking to them.

It costs nothing (unless you have limited minutes, but most plans have unlimited now). But it gives you connection. Real connection. The kind that matters.

Why we forget these things are fun

We’re obsessed with expensive entertainment. We think fun has to cost so much money. We think we need to be productive even when relaxing.

We’ve been convinced that joy comes from big experiences.

From vacations. From fancy things. From things we can post about.

But sometimes the best fun is the simple stuff. The free stuff.

The stuff that’s right in front of us.

We just forgot to notice it.

This week, try to pick one from this list. Do it. Notice how it feels. Notice if you remember what it feels like to have fun without spending money.

Notice if you feel lighter. More alive. More present.

You deserve to have fun. You deserve to enjoy your life. And you don’t need permission or money or anything fancy to do it.

Just yourself. And one of these things.

Go have fun. Legally. Responsibly. 😂

See you tomorrow. 🤎
