A Prayer for the Family

Father in Heaven,

I want to thank You, first of all, for the family.

For the gift of it.

Because when I stop and actually look at it, my goodness — what a masterpiece!

A father. A mother. Children. And then it extends in both directions — our children have children, our parents had parents, and somewhere in the middle two whole families merge into one.

My wife’s family became mine. Mine became hers. What an incredible system You created.

A way to live closely with another soul. To become a better version of myself. To worship You together.

A small church, right there in the living room. Learning together. Praising together. Rejoicing together. Grieving together. Lifting each other’s burdens.

And Lord, I’m realizing something. You gave us the family to make it easier to keep Your two greatest commandments. To love You — because family is where we rejoice and give thanks and discover You are good. And to love our neighbor — starting with the neighbor sleeping in the next room.

The whole law, practiced at the kitchen table.

But forgive me, Father. We take family for granted precisely because it has always been there. We move through the same rooms with the same people and stop seeing them.

So open my eyes. Let me give thanks before I am forced to give thanks by losing it.

And Father, not every family looks like this.

Some are missing a chair that should be filled. Some were broken by things that were never supposed to happen. Some have had to be built by hand — out of friends who became brothers, mentors who became fathers, a church that became home. That was me.

But You are the God who sets the lonely in families. Where a chair is empty, You draw close. Where the picture is incomplete, be the missing piece.

No one who has You is without a family.

Make me intentional with the ones I do have — my parents, for I am the center of their lives, whether they say it or not. My children, for they watch how I love more closely than they listen to what I teach. My spouse, for that is where the family begins, and everything else is built on top of it.

And most of all — make me intentional with You.

Because when my relationship with You is strong, it doesn’t stay contained. It flows outward. To my spouse. My children. My parents. My neighbors. And beyond.

The family flows out of You.

Let it flow back to You.

In the powerful name of Jesus — the Name above every name, the Name that gathers us home.

Amen.
