When we began living this Bible Health lifestyle 23 years ago, I thought I understood the benefits.

I believed removing white sugar and processed foods, exercising, making healthier products for our home, managing our finances wisely, and honoring our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit would help us feel better, recover faster, and hopefully experience less sickness and disease.

And it has.

But there was another benefit I never expected.

Resilience.

I did not realize that the disciplines we were building in our spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, financial, occupational, and social lives would eventually become guardrails that helped keep our family standing when life felt like one crisis after another.

That is the unexpected fruit of living God’s way.

“I felt the Holy Spirit tug me after seeing a video of Dr. Z and feel like this is the path I am supposed to take. I said to myself, I want what they have.”

— Mary O.

Romans 5 gives us the answer

“We know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” — Romans 5:3-55

Biblical resilience is the God-given capacity to remain rooted, faithful, obedient, and hopeful while you are walking through something you never would have chosen.

Notice the progression.

Suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, and character produces hope.

That is resilience. Biblical resilience is the unexpected fruit of living a godly, disciplined life in Christ Jesus, with guardrails already established, so that when crisis comes, you remain strong enough to serve others instead of allowing every area of your life to crumble.

This is not a promise that believers will avoid suffering. It is a promise that God can produce something through our suffering that comfort alone could never develop.

The trial is not the fruit. The fruit shows up as perseverance, character, and hope.

And that hope does not disappoint us because it is not built on circumstances working out exactly as we planned. It is built on the love of God poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

That is Biblical resilience.

There is a level of pressure right now that people can feel, and many of our friends and family are in the thick of it.

One crisis is followed by another, and eventually you begin to wonder how much more you can handle.

We understand that because we have been walking through our own season of trial.

Some of it is private because we are still in the middle of it. I believe there will come a day when I can tell the entire story and it will help a lot of people. But right now, we are still living that chapter.

One part we have shared involves Mama Z’s father (Papa). We introduced you to the story in When My Dad Forgot My Name.

We recently traveled to Michigan for what was supposed to be our normal two-week family visit.

Instead, Mama Z’s father became seriously ill.

He has frontotemporal dementia, and during our trip he developed pneumonia, sepsis, congestive heart failure, and other complications that required hospitalization and rehabilitation.

A two-week trip became five weeks.

Mama Z’s mother suddenly found herself navigating doctors, insurance, medical equipment, home care, mobility concerns, and painful decisions about memory care.

She is 76 years old and has been married to the love of her life for more than 50 years. Now she is watching dementia slowly take his life and change him in heartbreaking ways while making decisions she never imagined she would face.

Our family needed to help.

And by God’s grace, we were able to.

We had seven children with us. Our business still required attention. There was yard work, housework, insurance work, medical work, and everything else that needed to be handled.

But our entire life did not fall apart.

  • Our marriage remained strong.

  • Our children remained close.

  • Our health remained stable.

  • We did not begin recklessly spending money.

  • We did not abandon the way we normally eat and live.

We were able to stay, serve, make decisions, care for our children, and help Mama Z’s family carry a burden that had become too heavy for one person.

At one point, I felt the Lord showing me that He was preserving us.

The disciplines we had built over the years were helping place us in a position where one crisis did not destroy every other area of our lives.

That is Biblical resilience.

While in Michigan we snuck away for a couple hours to the local gardens to take graduation photos for Esther’s senior year and grabbed some quick family pictures.

This season has been heavy, but we are grateful to be here and serve the people we love. Sometimes resilience looks like showing up tired, finding joy in the middle of the hard, and doing the next faithful thing. Never give up, and keep serving God with all your heart, no matter what your circumstances look like.

We talk often about creating guardrails around your health.

For us, some things are simply non-negotiable.

I do not knowingly eat white sugar. It has been 23 years. Our children have never had soda or eaten at McDonald’s. We either make our own version or find a healthier swap.

This is not about perfection, legalism, or condemnation.

It is about deciding how your family lives before pressure forces you to decide in the moment, and setting up your non-negotiables is paramount in times of crisis.

We discuss our three non-negotiables here…

The same principle applies beyond food.

  • You need spiritual guardrails.

  • You need financial guardrails.

  • You need boundaries around your work.

  • You need healthy ways to manage stress.

  • You need to protect your marriage.

  • You need people you can trust when you are struggling.

When these areas are strengthened together, you are better prepared when one of them comes under attack.

That is why Bible Health has never been only about food, exercise, essential oils, or removing toxic products.

Jesus said,

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” — John 10:10

The Abundant Life encompasses every area of our lives.

It does not mean we will never get sick, need medication, face financial pressure, or experience grief.

It means we have what we need in Christ to walk through the season infinitely better than we would without Him.

It means our cup is being filled so that we have something to pour into someone else.

That is when I began to recognize Biblical resilience as one of the greatest benefits of the Bible Health lifestyle.

If you’ve felt that gap between your faith and your health, you’re in the right place. Bible Health gives you the Biblical clarity to close it.

“I’m going through an extremely difficult health situation... the affirmations brought me to tears.”

— Lynne M

Before we went to Michigan, I had been carrying my own unresolved burden.

My tendency is not usually to blame God. My tendency is to blame myself.

For months, one phrase kept coming out of my mouth:

  • “I don’t know.”

  • “I don’t know what to do.”

  • “I don’t understand.”

  • “I don’t see the way forward.”

I repeated it so often that it became more than a description of one unanswered question.

It became the posture of my heart.

I was confessing helplessness.

Then I felt the Holy Spirit correct me:

Stop saying that.

The situation did not immediately change, but my confession did.

Instead of repeating, “I don’t know,” I began reminding myself:

  • “God knows.”

  • “I will know in God’s season.”

  • “God will prepare me and show me what I need to know when I need to know it.”

As my confession changed, my faith changed.

The sleepless nights began to go away. The anxiety and panic began to lift. My confidence in God returned. I had to renew my mind and that was one of the reasons I wrote this piece…

And I was in a much better position spiritually and emotionally when Mama Z’s family needed us.

I had begun plugging the hole in my own spiritual jar so that what God was pouring into me could begin overflowing again.

My cup could run over.

“A brief note to heartily thank you for your Bible Health ministry, so clearly rooted in our Lord’s love for His children. We appreciate how you so graciously reach out to help others in their journeys on this earth.”

— Reb and Eileen M.

What negative confession have you been rehearsing?

  • “I always mess things up.”

  • “We cannot afford anything.”

  • “My body is broken.”

  • “I am not smart enough.”

  • “My marriage will never change.”

  • “I cannot handle this.”

When we repeat these things, we begin believing them. Then we begin living according to what we believe.

This is why renewing the mind is foundational to health.

You can replace the toxic products in your home, eat a clean diet, exercise, and take supplements. But if you are continually speaking death over yourself, your family, your health, and your future, those other changes can only take you so far.

Our words need to align with God’s Word so that our thoughts begin aligning with His thoughts.

This is not about magical declarations or pretending everything is fine.

It is about refusing to make fear, confusion, defeat, and helplessness your confession.

After an extended stay in Michigan caring for family through a medical emergency, we finally made the long drive home and stopped at Buc-ee’s along the way. The kids found this sign that said, “Together we make one beautiful family,” and after the month we have had, it felt like a little reminder from God. Your family does not have to look perfect or have an easy story to be beautiful. Keep showing up, loving each other well, and holding one another close through every season because together, you are building something precious.

What you are reading is the why. What comes next is the how.

The habits you establish today will help determine how you respond tomorrow.

Read God’s Word.

Pray God’s Word.

Speak God’s Word.

Believe it and obey it.

  • Take care of your body.

  • Create financial boundaries.

  • Protect your marriage.

  • Stay connected to trustworthy people.

  • Do not isolate yourself when you are struggling.

You do not need 20 people knowing every detail of your life, but you need a few people you can trust and pray with.

These disciplines build resilience.

They help you build your life on the rock so that when the storm comes, you are more secure.

We believed the Bible Health lifestyle would help us become healthier.

We did not realize it was preparing us to remain standing when crisis came.

The food choices, financial boundaries, family rhythms, relationships, prayers, Scripture, thoughts, words, and daily disciplines were all building something.

They were building resilience.

Our situation is not completely resolved. But God has already given us a measure of victory.

And part of that victory began when I changed my confession.

  • What are you speaking over your life right now?

  • What are you saying about your health, your family, your work, your finances, and your future?

  • What guardrails is God asking you to establish?

Your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

The choices you make today may be preparing you for something you cannot yet see.

That is the unexpected fruit of living God’s way.

That is Biblical resilience.

We are still in the middle of our story.

There are parts I am not ready to share.

When you are going through something, you do not always need to tell every person every detail. You need people who will pray for you, but there are times when you need to protect the process while God is working.

Once you receive the victory, whatever that victory looks like, the struggle can become your testimony.

Maybe the victory is physical healing.

Maybe the situation has not changed, but you are no longer depressed.

Maybe you still have unanswered questions, but you are no longer living in fear.

Maybe the crisis is continuing, but your marriage is stronger, your family is closer, and your faith is more secure.

Do not waste what God is teaching you.

Your testimony may become the word of encouragement someone else needs when they are walking through the same thing.

What are you building today that will carry you tomorrow?

And what have you been repeatedly saying that God may be asking you to stop saying?

For me, it was “I don’t know.”

Perhaps yours is “I can’t,” “I’m not enough,” “It is too late,” or “Nothing will ever change.”

Bring that confession before the Lord.

Then ask Him to replace it with words that agree with His Word, His character, and His promises.

The goal is not to deny the storm.

The goal is to become the kind of person who knows where to stand when it comes.

That is Biblical resilience.

That is the unexpected fruit of living God’s way.

And that is part of the Abundant Life Jesus came to give us.
