Over the past 25 years or so, I’ve had countless conversations that I would categorize as a sort of spiritual check up. I check in with people about how life is going, particularly about where they are at in their spiritual lives. There are generally three common answers to this sort of spiritual check up conversation.
An expression of desire to root oneself more firmly in God’s Word.
Anxiety, sorrow, and hopelessness about the state of the world. (Much more common in recent years)
A feeling like one’s prayer life is somehow lacking.
Do you see yourself in any or all of these responses?
These are not the only answers I hear. Others are more particular to a person’s spiritual journey. But I’d say about half of the time one of these three answers is a part of the conversation.
In each of these cases, the biggest challenge seems to be that people don’t know where to start. They have tried different things that have not seemed to work. For some people it’s a “Read the Bible in Year” plan where they get behind and then give up by mid-February. For others it’s feeling too small to do anything to affect any of the messes they see in the world. And for others there is this sense that—I should have figured out something as simple as praying by now.
Perhaps you can see in these three responses how my answer has been the Ten Trilogy. Each book in this series has been a primer on these common concerns about the spiritual life.
If you feel a desire to dive into God’s Word more, then I’d recommend Ten Questions to Ask Every Time You Read the Bible.
If you feel the anxiety and hopelessness of this broken world, I’d suggest Ten Lies Satan Loves to Tell.
And if you feel like your prayer life is somehow lacking, I’d recommend the third and final installment of the trilogy—Ten Treasures of Learning to Pray.
And if you’d like to learn more about this latest book, check out the video below.
If you can think of anyone who might benefit from any of the books in this series, please share this post with them.
Thanks for reading. Thanks for letting me walk alongside you in your spiritual journey.
Andy
