Ten Treasures of Learning to Pray, Arriving August 20

Well friends, it is time for some BIG NEWS!

My next book, Ten Treasures of Learning to Pray, releases in just over two months on August 20.

Since you all have been so generous to subscribe to my newsletter here, you get to see it before the rest of the world. Here it is!

You’ll notice it looks a lot like my previous two books. The 10 is the same shape and size. The title is inside the 0 with my name beneath it. The colors are of course different. We progressed from green to red and here to blue. The color of the ten moved from gold to silver to this bronzish color.

The reason for the similar look between the three books is that this book is the third and final installment of this series. The series highlights the three concepts of Martin Luther’s receptive spirituality—namely oratio, meditatio, tentatio. For those unfamiliar with Latin, that is prayer, meditation (on the Scriptures), and temptation (the assaults of Satan). The series doesn’t follow Luther’s order. I began with meditatio in Ten Questions to Ask Every Time You Read the Bible, and continued to tentatio in Ten Lies Satan Loves to Tell. Ten Treasures is the book about prayer—oratio.

On the cover, you’ll also notice a treasure chest in the background. In the book, I compare prayer to a treasure chest that we are invited to open and explore as frequently and as deeply as we like.

The book seeks to ask one central question: Why do we pray?

Like my other books, I spend the bulk of the book looking at what the Scriptures teach us. Each chapter dives into a particular treasure, lesson, or benefit that I see Jesus teaching us about prayer or through prayer. We then look at other prayer guides in the Bible and see what they have to say about that facet of prayer. We’ll hear from guides like Hannah, David, the Canaanite Mother, Moses, the woman with the flow of blood, Abraham, the sons of Korah, and many more. And we’ll look at treasures of prayer such as persistence and limitations, solitude and community, lament and rejoicing.

I’m excited for you all to read it! And you will be able to…soon! The book will be available for pre-order from the publisher, Concordia Publishing House, in about ten days. But you can pre-order it from some sellers already! Links to those are below.
