1. No country has ever pulled more human beings out of poverty, or out from under a boot, than this one—and it did both at once, on purpose, for 200 years.
2. It wrote “all men are created equal” with a hand that owned slaves, and the sentence turned out smarter than the man who held the pen—the people he owned were quoting it back before the ink was dry.
3. Founded by men who committed capital treason against their king, then spent two centuries becoming the world’s most confident lecturer on law and order.
4. It went to war over a tax on tea and now pays its banks more in overdraft fees than the crown ever dared to ask.
5. The only country whose deepest identity is an argument, which is why it can never win it and never quite loses it.
6. Its secret ingredient was treating the individual as sacred, which is also the recipe for 340 million people each convinced the other 339 million are ruining it.
7. It confused the individual (it was founded to dignify) with the individual it was built to sell to and still hasn’t noticed the swap.
8. It ended slavery by killing 600,000 of its own—the most expensive apology in history: half-finished, half-remembered, and still being billed for.
9. Its greatness runs on a single input, immigration, and it has spent all 250 years insisting the next boat is the one that finally ruins everything.
10. It reaches the moral high ground reliably, on a forty-year lag, then acts as though it had been standing there the whole time.
11. It can no longer build a train, a bridge, or a reactor on time and safely, but whatever you order tonight will be on your porch by morning.
12. “Socialism” is its word for the reliable fire department; “freedom” is its word for the extravagant bill after the ambulance.
13. It put God on the money, in the pledge, and at the execution, and cannot find Him anywhere near the eviction notice.
14. It has announced its own imminent end roughly every four years since 1800, gone zero-for-fifty, and treats the streak as a boast rather than an inevitability.
15. Its own citizens are now less proud of their country than the world average, which is a genuinely difficult thing to accomplish.
16. It discovered it had “always” been a city on a hill at roughly the moment it needed a Cold War slogan; the sermon had sat unread for three hundred years.
17. It pushed the British, the French, and the Dutch to give up their empires, using the wars it helped win as the lever, and this is somehow the least-remembered decent thing it ever did for the world.
18. It gave the planet the assembly line, the vaccine, the moon, and jazz, and now aims the same genius at keeping you scrolling four seconds longer.
19. So allergic to kings that it keeps trying to elect one; so devoted to freedom it cannot stop asking to be saved.
20. The immigrants it fears are more patriotic than the citizens it raised.
21. Its politics organized around who each side hates, which is what happens when a country makes a religion of the self and then holds elections for a god.
22. It built the most powerful engine for human individuality ever assembled, right on schedule to hand the thinking to a machine that will not need one.
23. It is a communion of people who will never meet, holding in their heads a country they mostly imagined, and dying for it anyway: a nation indeed.
24. It has been, by a wide and faintly embarrassing margin, the most successful thing the species pulled off in the industrial age, and it managed this while being wrong about nearly everything, which tells you less about the errors than about the height of the bar it cleared.
25. I left it this year, and I still cannot stop defending it at European dinner tables, because the hypocrisy is real and the greatness is real—and that argument, the one that never ends, is the most American thing I brought with me.
