Retaliation for the Battle of Great Falls

On May 20, 1676, the day after the Battle of Great Falls, Indigenous warriors retaliated with a raid on the town of Scituate, Massachusetts. Nineteen houses were burned.

On May 24, English troops, under the command of Captain Thomas Brattle, killed a number of Indigenous people who were fishing in the Pawtucket River near present-day Seekonk, Massachusetts.

On May 29, after more than a year of ongoing engagements between the English colonists and the Indigenous people, New York’s Governor Edmund Andros offered refuge and protection to New England Indigenous people who were fleeing north. Initially extended to the tribes of the Connecticut River Valley, Andros’s offer later came to include all Indigenous people in the region.

On May 30, nearly two weeks after the massacre at Great Falls, Indigenous warriors attacked the town of Hatfield, MA, also in retaliation. After a skirmish, the Indigenous fled. Also on May 30, 1676, Indigenous warriors under Tispaquin raided Plymouth, MA, burning nine buildings.
