A Dispatch to Governor Edmund Andros

On July 20, 1676, Captain Benjamin Church led an attack on Metacom’s camp near Bridgewater, MA. Though Metacom escaped, his wife and son were taken captive and were later sold into slavery in the West Indies.

On this same day, the Connecticut Council sent a dispatch to New York Governor Edmund Andros, encouraging him to turn away the starving Indigenous refugees who had been attacked at Westfield and were fleeing West to New York. Having already offered New England Indigenous people sanctuary, Andros refused.
