For me, art has been a vehicle for self discovery. It has confronted me with questions that in turn have lead to profound life discoveries. Who am I? And, why? Coming to realize these existential truths about myself has been more than I could have imagined two decades plus ago when I began my foray into the visual arts.
This painting reflects my mental detox of sorts — accumulated nonsense and folly being uprooted from my reasoning mind as I learned more about my identity.
A chance meeting with a Chassidic Yeshiva student in Wyoming; many intimate conversations to follow; and a lot of delving into great works of Jewish wisdom from centuries past, opened my eyes to what I had long misunderstood and ignored.
The more I learned about what it was I didn’t believe, the more I realized my assumptions and disbeliefs about Judaism were baseless; and, the more I saw the potential and significance to being who I am.
