I was recently asked how I come up with the ideas for my art. It was an interesting question that deserved more thought than I had time to give it. But given we were standing in a lobby with a lot of people milling around, I said simply, “I just follow my creative urges.”
Although this is true, I think there is more to it. I think it has to do with my commitment and intention with respect to what I’m involved with. When I flick that proverbial switch of my inner will and drive and pour all of myself into bringing a vision into reality, the flood-gates of ever-evolving possibility open wide. I’ve found this to be true not only with my art but with other life endeavors as well.
Once I truly commit, there seems to be an endless well of energy and ideas that flow through me. The biggest challenge is to catch the idea I want to pursue and break through any insecurity or doubt I have about whether it can be accomplished. This is what I had simplified in my response to the person who asked how I come up with the ideas for my art. “I just follow my creative urges,” I said. Implying, the rest takes care of itself.
It’s said, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Can this apply to an abstract? I’ll let the painting speak for itself.
