Safed (Tzfat), Israel, Acrylic on Cardboard, 60” X 18” (Part of my Pop-up Exhibition: “A Letter in the Scroll”)
During a visit to Israel, I came across the above scene as we entered the city of Safed (Tzfat). Of all places to see a broken lamp! In a city, with a multi-century history of both esteemed and aspiring “lamplighters.”
With darkness descending over much of our world, may the lamps in need of lighting, be lit soon!
The above is one of ten paintings in my Pop-Up Exhibition titled “A Letter in the Scroll.” The Baal Shem Tov and later, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks in his book by the same title, spoke of the Jewish People as a living Torah Scroll. Each and every Jew is their own unique and indispensable “Letter in the Scroll.”
