250m: However, on the second, more technical (and thus slower) part of the course, he isn’t able to ramp up and hold an extremely high speed.

Finish: He still comes over the line with the day’s fastest time so far, but with just a second over compatriot Callum Thornley.

Ethan Hayter:
Finish: Shortly after, another British rider, Ethan Hayter, a lighter, punchier rider, rips through the course and comes down the final straight with picture-perfect form (and steady-state speed) to shatter Tarling’s time and clock the day’s fastest time by four seconds.

3.7km: At the intermediate sprint point, Wout van Aert comes through four seconds down on Hayter’s time, a near-impossible gap to overcome in less than four km on a highly technical course.

250m: Van Aert comes out of the final tunnel with high speed, but still in the saddle, as he rips down the final straight. He comes in well off the pace for the race win, but limits his loss to just nine seconds to the eventual winner, meaning he could still take the leader’s jersey in the coming stages.

250m: Pogačar, after coming through the intermediate time check three seconds off the pace of Hayter, exhibits extremely impressive technical riding to make up time and shoots out of the final tunnel out of the saddle with a completely unmatched turn of speed.

Finish: Pogačar carries this speed as he settles back into his time trial position and comes over the finish line with 0.9 seconds in hand over Hayter to take the stage win and the first overall leader’s jersey of this Vuelta.
