Nick Sogard Has Earned his Playing Time Despite Reinforcements Coming

Reinforcements are coming. That’s not such a bad thing, as it serves as an internal trade deadline acquisition. Roman Anthony will be the biggest one of them all and will spend the week rehabbing still in Worcester. Fans may disagree and want him right now, but protecting the asset is necessary and not rushing him is the right move. This team has shown they can win without him and him at close to full strength will be an even better boost. He isn’t the only one coming though.

The Red Sox are going ahead to re-evaluate infielders Trevor Story and Isaiah Kiner-Falefa. Given that they are both middle infielders, that means there will be a roster shuffle. The players that could be in question are Anthony Seigler aka Tony Seagulls, Andruw Monasterio, and Nick Sogard. Of course there is a way that this all works and the deck chairs line up nicely, but one thing should be made crystal clear; Nick Sogard deserves to be on this team.

There’s something special about Sogard. Ed Hand, who has been in the corner of Sogard for a very long time and uses the hashtag “Sogie Supremacy”. It’s quite catchy, but it also by the definition supremacy means having authority or power above everyone else. Well, when it comes to the infielders that actually is the case and his level of play on the baseball field backs that up.

Sogard is a guy you can label as a ballplayer. Sure, he isn’t gonna blow you away with raw defining power, but a guy who does all the little things well that help you win baseball games. It’s a flawed comparison, but he reminds me a lot of Ernie Clement of the Toronto Blue Jays. A great contact oriented bat, that plays efficient defense, and does the little things to contribute to the team.

Sogard got his chance to come back up to the big club on June 29. When it comes to life at the plate, Sogard is third in average (.299), second in OBP (.421), to pair with his team best walk rate in this same span (17.4%). Furthermore, the slugging percentage isn’t bad (.448) and his OPS is second best on this team (.869). Having a 146 wRC+ certainly helps. In this stretch, Sogard has two home runs, including one that helped break Brandon Pfaddt’s scoreless inning streak.

Whats also made Sogard special is his ability to come through with an at bat and play the hero. You can definitely call the second game against the Giants the Nick Sogard game. Sogard came through in the bottom of the ninth with a massive double that helped drive in the game tying run. Ultimately, Abreu got to play the big hero by having the game winning hit, but if not for the play made in the bottom of the eighth, the deficit is likely larger.

The Giants had the bases loaded and two outs. Their prized rookie in Bryce Eldridge came up to the plate and is one of their power threats. Sogard made a diving play to make the catch and end the inning. Had me not dove there, that deficit is easily 3-0, maybe even 4-0. Speaking of doing all the little things well, Sogard is an exceptional defender and that play above helps encapsulate how good the defense actually is.

Sogard has one defensive runs saved and two outs above average. This gives him a fielding run value of three. The players he’s behind? Ceddanne Rafaela, Caleb Durbin, and Wilyer Abreu. Those are all players very likely to win gold gloves at their respective positions and the end of the season. He’s also done that in 300 less innings of playing time too. Best part about him is his versatility and him being able to play anywhere. Whether it is second base or short stop, you’re going to get sufficient defense and he is a net positive at the plate. You do not play the guys coming back over him, you play your very best to win games and Sogard is that.

Which makes this decision for what the Red Sox do so fascinating. Can Trevor Story and IKF be key contributors in some capacity for the team? Absolutely. But how short is that leash going to be? Likely short. Especially in the aspect of Story. This Red Sox offense has an identity and an approach that makes them effective. Story is quite opposite of that approach. That’ll be fascinating to watch.

Monasterio has had his bat cool down, but he’s a guy who helped get you to where you are now. Vibes are always high with Seigler, but he’s lost playing time unfortunately and that’s been the reality of the situation.

Sogard Supremacy reigns supreme and given what he’s done and how he’s mattered to this team, he’s a player that should be part of this ride the rest of the way and not lose his playoff time. No reason for him to lose playing time.
