The Cowford Report: Free Kick's Decide Sporting Jax's Fate

Welcome to a Saturday edition of the Cowford Report as we answer the tough questions. Question such as:

• Can Sporting Jax win in the USL Championship against an Indy Eleven side that has only picked up 2 out of a possible 24 points in league play?

• Can the Sporting Jax ladies remain unbeaten in the Battle of the Florida Triangle as the Gainbridge Super League 2026 sprint begins?

Sporting Jax started 7 players who weren’t even in camp to start the preseason and it showed. The chemistry wasn’t there at all, Jean Mota the most frustrating the most of them all. On more than one occasion he was left hung out to dry on a right ball ran wrong by the intended target.

The other major issue Sporting Jax had was just not having enough bodies forward at the moments they were needed. Indy Eleven played the 2 blocks of 4 to perfection, finding plenty of opportunities to get Bruno Rendo, Jack Blake and Josh O’Brien chances to cook. While many of those shots were the sound of fury signifying absolutely nothing, Indy Eleven was forcing Sporting Jax into uncomfortable moments. Jake McGuire moved into 13th in the saves list, but I don’t think he’ll care.

I feel for Raheem Sommersall, everyone knew he was going to need to be subbed off on 27 minutes. Liam Fox finally did the right thing with Neville and played him in a more attacking mid role. It’s where he’s best.

In a game of all it was going to take is one, Indy Eleven took their one. 2nd half substitute Loci Mesanvi did well to win a free kick off Ventura Alvarado starting 2nd half stoppage time. Cam Lindley can place a free kick on a dime, and his free kick found Paco Craig far post. Craig’s header would go off Antonio Gomez, who knew nothing about where the ball was nor the man he was suppose to be marking, and slip into the back of the net to give Indy Eleven their first road win of the season, first overall in 364 days (thanks to Brett Mullenix for that stat).

Sporting Jax have 10 matches to find that chemistry, and to fight for a spot on any roster in 2027.

When I saw Jamie Gerstenberg was in goal, I had a hunch this could be one of those nights for the Sporting Jax ladies. With Kaitlyn Parks on the bench, the last thing the squad needs is another debate like the one seen at the start of last year surrounding who’s the one between the posts.

The first half hour leaned Fort Lauderdale. While both sides had opportunities in the final third, a defending touch was at the ready to finish off any attack.

The field would flip for good in the 34th minute, a Ginger Fontenot pass to Sophia Boman too deep but fumbled by Haley Craig. Boman would collect and go for goal, not finding the target. A minute later, Kiara Locklear would make a 50 yard run to beat Maggie Illig, her centering pass found Grace Cutler, Gerstenberg getting back to save.

Fort Lauderdale was able to break the press with ease, Gerstenberg lucky Locklear was already offside before a question had to be asked about the centering pass to Sh’nia Gordon. Starting the 2nd half, Emily Thompson’s free kick should have been buried by Ella Simpson. Sporting Jax had to survive wave after wave of Fort Lauderdale attacks, but that changed on 58 minutes when Kelli Van Treek replaced Emily Thompson. Suddenly passes in the final third that were connecting weren’t and Sporting Jax would clear. Over the course of the 60-70th minutes Fort Lauderdale ceded control back to Sporting Jax. Despite the chances on goal the game remained nil-nil.

Once the subs cycled through, Sporting Jax were the side looking likely to win it. Their chance to do so would come from an 88th minute free kick when Shea Moyer went through Andrea Fernandez as she went for goal 19 yards out. Meg Hughes and Baylee DeSmit would settle over the free kick. Hughes’s dummy run would open the wall just enough for Baylee DeSmit to strike, the ball taking enough of a deflection off Moyer’s boot to get past a diving Haley Craig to win it for Sporting Jax.

On a night where Sporting Jax had to survive for most of the contest, they still found a way to win. All that’s going to matter in the standings is Sporting Jax started the 2026 Gainbridge Super League spring 1-0-0.
