Sacramento Republic FC has agreed to transfer 19-year-old homegrown centerback Chibuike “Chibi” Ukaegbu to Major League Soccer club Houston Dynamo FC for a club-record transfer fee. Ukaegbu will initially join Houston Dynamo II in MLS NEXT Pro, pending league and federation approval.
The move marks another milestone for Republic FC’s youth development pipeline, sending one of the USL Championship’s top young defenders to an MLS organization.
A native of Roseville, California, Ukaegbu joined Republic FC’s youth academy at 14 years old in 2021 after developing with Placer United. Over two seasons with the academy, the centerback made 60 appearances, helping both the U-15 and U-17 squads reach the MLS NEXT Cup playoffs.
His rapid development earned him training opportunities with the senior squad before signing his first professional contract with his hometown club in November 2023.
Ukaegbu made an immediate impression in his professional debut on May 7, 2024, starting in a U.S. Open Cup clash against Monterey Bay FC. At just 17 years old, he led all players on the pitch with four tackles won and seven duels won. Later in the tournament, he came off the bench during Republic FC’s 4-3 extra-time victory over MLS side San Jose Earthquakes.
47 First-Team Matches: Ukaegbu logged 22 starts and nearly 2,500 minutes across all competitions for Sacramento.
20 Clean Sheets: Featured heavily across matches where the Republic backline preserved a shutout.
Deep Cup & Playoff Runs: Helped lead Sacramento to two USL Championship playoff berths, the 2025 USL Cup Final, three U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 appearances, and a 2024 Open Cup Quarterfinal berth.
Open Cup Shootout Heroics: In 2026 Open Cup play, Ukaegbu entered as a late substitute to close out a clean sheet against MLS side Minnesota United before converting his attempt in a dramatic 12-round penalty shootout.
National Team Recognition: Earned six call-ups to U.S. Soccer Youth National Team programs since 2024, including selections to both the U-19 and U-20 Men’s National Teams.

Founded in 2015, Republic FC’s youth academy has established itself as the premier youth-to-pro pipeline in Northern California.
To date, more than 30 academy products have advanced to the professional ranks globally, with eight signing first-team pro deals directly with Sacramento. Additionally, nearly 50 players have competed on USL Academy contracts with the first team, and over 100 academy alumni have moved on to compete at the NCAA Division I collegiate level.
