The 2026 season has not gotten off to the best of starts for the women’s soccer team at the University of Memphis. After a 2-0 win over Kennesaw State to start the year, the Tigers were stunned in the dying seconds against Alabama and fell 2-1. Last Friday was the first road test for the Tigers when they traveled up to Nashville to take on a Top-5 Vanderbilt team. After a 4-1 loss to the Commodores, it’s safe to say the Tigers did not pass their first road test. There’s no letup in the schedule, however, as Memphis must now regroup for another SEC road game, this time against Ole Miss.
The start to this year has been rather uncharacteristic for the Tigers. In fact, over the last three seasons, Memphis has only lost two non-conference games (at Alabama in 2023 and at Tennessee in 2024). Not only have they typically been quite good in non-conference play, but on those rare occasions when they do lose, it’s a while before they lose again. The last time Memphis lost two games in a row was during the 2022 season when they dropped games against Louisville and Virginia. It’s worth noting that, while the 2022 team got off to a horrendous start (four wins in their first twelve games) they were able to rebound by winning the conference tournament and made it all the way to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. And after 26 years in charge, Coach Brooks Monaghan has more than earned the benefit of the doubt and many Tigers fans will almost certainly have complete faith in his ability to get this year’s team back on track.
It’s not going to be easy, though, as Ole Miss comes into this game with a perfect 4-0-0 record on the season. They opened up the season with a 1-0 home win over Murray State before consecutive road wins against UL-Lafayette and College of Charleston (2-1 and 1-0 respectively). Their last time out was a third straight road game, this time against UAB (a conference foe of Memphis’) which they handled by a final score of 2-0. The Rebels are let by first-year head coach Todd Shulenberger who spent the last eleven seasons at Washington State (who, as fate would have it, eliminated Memphis from the 2019 NCAA Tournament). The star players to watch for Ole Miss are Katie Ramsden and Sarah Granno, who combined for 14 of the 30 goals Ole Miss scored last season.
