The recent reports by The Athletic and Soccerwise insider Tom Bogert highlighting moves from the USL pathway to Europe underscore the growing international viability of the North American lower-division ecosystem.
Rather than the previous youth player sales to Europe or moves to MLS, JJ Williams move to a contending club is a positive step at a time when the vast majority of USL Championship clubs are losing money, in some cases lots of it. Seeing a pipeline develop for middle-aged players or non-academy guys might incentivize more investment. It certainly cannot hurt. And in the case of Colton Swan its another young USL player moving reinforcing that pipeline.
Here is my breakdown of all the moves.
