The lower-division American soccer landscape has officially sparked a turf war in Nassau County. With the United Soccer League’s announcement of a USL League One expansion club playing out of Hofstra University, Long Island is set to host an unprecedented head-to-head battle between the USL and MLS NEXT Pro’s independent expansion side, The Island FC.
When I wrote my shortish book which is now completely dated, Soccerwarz in 2016 it was largely motivated by the desire of the NASL 2.0 which I had previously worked for to selectively invade USL and MLS markets while maintaining a hubris inspired by the New York Cosmos who at the time were playing on Long Island.
The two new clubs are slated to operate less than one mile apart in Hempstead and Uniondale, setting up the most localized chapter of the modern American “Soccer Warz” yet.
