You know the feeling.
A client says: “You should write this down.” A colleague publishes a book, someone with less experience than you, less depth, less to say, and you feel something complicated. Not quite envy. More like recognition. That could be me. That should be me.
And then the day continues. Clients to serve. A business to run. A family to show up for. The book stays in the drawer of things you’ll get to eventually.
I want to talk to you about eventually.
If you’ve been here since the Author Growth days, you’ve watched this publication find its feet, morph into The Substack Bookstore, go quiet for longer than I intended, and come back.
What started as a book marketing newsletter for indie authors has grown into something broader, and I think more honest. The people I most want to serve are not just authors. They’re experts, consultants, coaches, founders, and knowledge workers who have spent years building real expertise and are earning a fraction of what that expertise is worth.
They’re trading time for money when they could be building assets.
They’re invisible outside their existing network when they could be findable.
They’re keeping the book in the drawer when the book could be opening doors.
Author Growth was the right name for where I started. Beyond Hourly is the right name for where we’re going.
The premise is simple: your expertise is not the problem. Your structure is. Most experts are trapped in the hourly model without realising it’s a choice. You bill for your time, deliver your knowledge, and start again from zero the next day. The knowledge compounds. The income doesn’t.
I call what fixes that expertise architecture: the deliberate construction of income-generating assets from what you already know. A strategically built book is one of the most powerful expressions of it. It is not the only one.
I’ve spent 25 years in marketing and publishing. Five books, multiple pen names, an Amazon bestseller. I’ve helped more than 100 experts and authors navigate the gap between having something to say and building something that actually reaches people.
The thing I learned, the thing that took me embarrassingly long to understand, is that the book is not the hard part.
The hard part is believing that your particular expertise, your particular story, your particular way of seeing the world, is specific enough and valuable enough and necessary enough to build something real around.
Most people who have a book in them never write it. Not because they can’t write. Not because they don’t have time. Because they can’t answer, with confidence, the question underneath all the other questions:
Will anyone care?
That’s the question I want to help you answer, with strategy and reassurance built from decades of experience.
Here’s who finds their way to this publication.
Some of you are consultants, coaches, therapists, or advisers who have built years of expertise and a quiet suspicion that a book, or a framework, or a platform, would change how your market sees you. You’re right. It would.
Some of you have a story. A hard one, maybe. An illness. A loss. A career that collapsed and rebuilt into something better. You’ve been told enough times to write it down that you’ve started to believe it, but you don’t know how to shape a personal story into something that helps other people rather than just documents your own experience.
Some of you write fiction, and you’re brilliant at it, and somewhere in the back of your mind you know that the skills you’ve developed, the discipline, the understanding of story and character and what makes a reader turn the page, could serve a different kind of book. One that teaches something. Or advocates for something. Or changes something.
Some of you came here from The Substack Bookstore. You love books, you read voraciously, and somewhere along the way you started wondering whether you might have one in you too. This is where that question gets answered.
All of you have this in common: you have something worth saying, and you haven’t yet built the thing that says it properly.
That’s what Beyond Hourly is about.
Beyond Hourly is built around a six-stage framework available to paying subscribers. It’s the methodology behind everything I teach here, and it applies whether the asset you build is a book, a newsletter, a course, or a product suite.
A strategically built book remains one of the most powerful authority assets an expert can own. It opens doors that a LinkedIn profile doesn’t. It justifies fees that a website can’t. It creates trust that advertising can’t buy. It works while you sleep, while you’re with your family, while you’re on holidays.
It doesn’t have to be a bestseller to do all of that, although that helps. It just has to be the right book, positioned for the right reader, launched into the right ecosystem, and connected to the business or life you’re actually trying to build.
That’s the work. It’s entirely learnable.
And starting next Tuesday, we’re doing it together.
I publish regular essays on one piece of it at a time. Positioning. Audience. Platform. Launch strategy. The business of books and the business of expertise. The psychology of authority. What makes readers trust someone before they’ve read a word. What makes a client hire someone because of a book they read on a plane.
Free subscribers get the thinking. Paid subscribers get the doing: the frameworks, the templates, the step-by-step execution that turns the ideas into something you can actually ship.
Annual membership is USD $77. Less than $2 a week for the full strategy. Plus access to $105 worth of tools that help you position yourself beyond your hourly rate. Founders’ Circle membership is $217 and gets you access to $302 worth of tools, plus more coming after 1 September. See some of the perks on the Beyond Hourly Perks Page.
Sometimes I’ll write about the harder things. About why smart people with valuable ideas stay quiet. About the particular kind of courage it takes to put your name on something and send it into the world. About what it costs to keep the book in the drawer for another year.
I’ve been through enough in my own life to know that time isn’t guaranteed and “eventually” is a dangerous word.
If you’ve been thinking about the book, or the course, or the platform, this is your sign to start thinking about it differently.
Not as a creative project you’ll get to someday, but as one of the most strategic things you could build for your authority, your income, and your legacy.
Let’s build it.
