Earlier today I was on the phone with my best friend whose husband is very ill. Once we talked about what was happening, we fell naturally into talking about the good times we had traveling together with our husbands who were good friends also.
Back when my mother had dementia twenty years ago there was a magazine called Reminisce. I remember reading her stories from the time of her earlier life which would often bring a smile to her face. I looked for it but it is only found on ebay and such today.
A I sat looking at old covers of the magazine on google, I realized I had reminisced with my husband often during the good days when his long term memory was very much intact. I had been a rabid scrapbooker in our early relationship and so there were many 12 X 12 scrapbooks that included not just photos, but airline tickets, hotel receipts, tour itineraries, theatre playbills, and national park trail guides.
Sometimes we would just go through the scrapbooks page by page. Other times I would start with asking what was your favorite camping trip and then we would do a deep dive into stories, pictures or mementos from that trip. Then it would be my turn to pick a trip, or concert, or AirBnB and it would be my turn to recite my thoughts.
Before we knew it, we had been transported out of our sadness or frustration or downright despair, into joy, laughter and gratitude. If only for an hour or two.
So very grateful for those adventures. Doubly glad those adventures brought us a second dose of joy together.
