A growing number of community foundations are organizing so-called giving days, locally focused fundraising that also builds the capacity of nonprofits with small staffs.
The grandaddy of these events may be North Texas Giving Day. The Communities Foundation of Texas raised $78 million for 3,500 nonprofits in the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area last year. Held every September, the event has raised more than $700 million since it began 18 years ago.
A nationwide report chronicled the impact of 29 local giving days, which raised $262 million for their communities in 2023. There are 700 community foundations across the country, so there is certainly room to grow.
If your community does not have a locally supported giving day, your station may be able to tap into the energy of the nationwide Giving Tuesday, held after Thanksgiving each year. A fundraising platform, DonorPerfect, recently published a free ebook with guidance on how to make the most of a giving day, including tips on how to avoid obstacles, and key strategies to reach your most likely donors.
