The Federal Communications Commission adopted new rules for EAS equipment last week. The change came after hackers compromised internet-based systems at several stations and aired unauthorized content.
The commission first proposed that all broadcasters adopt new, elaborate, extensive cybersecurity measures similar to those of the largest providers. But advocates for LPFM and other community stations argued such plans would be burdensome, and that they could implement more cost-effective plans to achieve the same security goals.

In addition, REC Networks (which advocated for the common-sense rules) published a detailed explainer of the new rules—including when and how they go into effect—and what they mean for community stations so that your station can come into compliance before the rules go into full effect.

Nothing in this Act shall be understood or construed to give the Commission the power of censorship over the radio communications or signals transmitted by any radio station, and no regulation or condition shall be promulgated or fixed by the Commission which shall interfere with the right of free speech by means of radio communication.
