Four people walked out of Google last week and took a chunk of the future with them.

Jeff Dean. Sanjay Ghemawat. Oriol Vinyals. Quoc Le. Dean and Ghemawat had 27 years each. Vinyals co-led Gemini. Le’s fingerprints are on word2vec and neural architecture search.

They left together to start Discovery Loop, a public benefit entity built to automate the research process itself.

Alphabet dropped around 5% on the news. 160 to 200 billion dollars of market cap attached to four names.

Google has infinite compute, the best distribution on earth, and something like 180,000 employees. The market still decided four humans were worth that much.

That’s the whole thesis in one headline. The org is not the moat. People are. Skills, taste, judgment, the specific way you see a problem. None of that transfers when you clean out your desk. It walks out with you.
