Every few months, I like to partake in what I call a gerbil (verb). This includes an enjoyable little game in which I contemplate a semi-big purchase for several weeks at a time, going over the pros and cons of said purchase like a gerbil on its wheel, running aimlessly and with no end in sight. Do I get this? Do I not? Will I like this in three years? The gerbil persists.
If you have a set amount of disposable income for “fun” purchases, you’ve probably gerbiled too. If I’m spending money on something unnecessary in this godforsaken economy, historically, I’ve wanted it to be something I’m going to use constantly, and ideally, that I’ll like for a long time. But what if that’s been the wrong approach all along? After all, I’ve made quite a few of the aforementioned semi-big purchases with “is this classic enough to be worn in five years?” as my operative question, only for it to backfire later on. My Chloe C bag that I bought thinking would be my go-to classic black bag for the rest of my days? It’s now a relic of 2018. What if, instead, I focused my funds on things that actually brought me joy? A white button-up that’ll still be in style in five years is great, but a chartreuse fringe-handle bag that makes me like all of my existing clothes a little more? That’s where the magic lies.
Sure, there’s a chance I might not like that lime green bag in five years, but I think there’s a higher chance I still like the dopamine-inducing bag I bought to have fun with than that I still like the It-bag of the moment that everyone pegged as a timeless investment piece (they never are—remember the Chanel Boy Bag?).
In the spirit of straying from neutrals and filling my closet with things that make my heart sing instead, these are the pieces that are currently occupying my brain (and making my gerbil run a little bit faster).
I can’t stop picturing myself wrapped up in a big chunky sweater with these Freda Salvador mules on my feet this fall. The pump version also has my heart.
