I’ve been honored to have taught with the incomparable Baron Wormser for over a decade and to have known him for over twenty years. His untimely death on October 7, 2025, sent those of us who knew him into a tailspin. The author of many volumes of poetry, Baron was an accomplished essayist, short story writer, and novelist. He brought unparalleled acumen to writing and teaching. His wisdom remains in his books, and his gentle, sweet spirit lingers. Please read novelist Rachel Basch’s moving tribute, “What the Poet Taught Me,” published in Agni online.
You can read many of Baron’s essays at The Exciting Nightmare: A Series of Essays on Modern Times. His last and latest volume of poetry, James Baldwin Smoking a Cigarette and Other Poems was published by Slant Books.
