Goal frames constrain conscious contents, often without becoming conscious contents.

The tip-of-the-tongue state provides a useful example.

A word is not consciously available. Yet the expected word constrains search. Wrong words are rejected. Related words may feel closer or farther from the target. Thus a nonconscious representation can occupy limited capacity and guide conscious access.
