Little Visits

I started recognizing “little visits” from my felines in memory back in 1996, after I’d lost Kublai, then Allegro, two weeks apart, and started writing about these experiences even then. I don’t doubt I had visits from Bootsie, my first cat, after I lost her in 1986, but though I sensed those visits it wasn’t until they happened very soon after the loss, and several together, that I focused on them and realized that for me they were things I sensed as clearly as the sound of thunder and the wind in my hair, though neither had physical form that I could see.

These stories describe the visits I believe my cats, in spirit, made to me after they transitioned to spirit. If you have followed me on The Creative Cat for the past three years and the losses of seven members of my feline family, you will be familiar with my current stories of these visits, enough to merge with these stories or create another anthology. I’ve been so deeply into these memories at this time and they naturally merge with what I’m experiencing nearly each day. With a little time for perspective and later as I compose the larger stories around these experiences, I will gather them all together into a form or forms I can share all together.

For now, I’d like to share these “little visits,” stories about the thinning of the veil when those lost to us in physical form but not in memory return to be in our presence however tenuously. I know our spirits are all together, mine and theirs, and all of theirs together, even if they lived at different times. Love is the link, and it’s what pulls aside the veil for us to share into eternity.

Recording

I’d shared one or more of these stories at Halloween practically since I started The Creative Cat in 2009. At one point I grouped them together into a natural small anthology. In 2016 I recorded them, added music by a friend, and posted the video to my YouTube channel. The video is 30 minutes long, and I’m embedding the video below so you can watch, or listen, at your leisure here, as you follow along with the text, or just listen on YouTube. I apologize for the sound, which is very soft. I’m not sure if the older program I used isn’t compatible with the platform now but I can’t modify the uploaded video in any way.

I’m happy I recorded this after years of thinking about it. It was really my beginning plan for recording all my books and poetry, and this one I’ll expand beyond these three stories to include other experiences I haven’t yet written about. But to do that I’ll need to purchase a better microphone and a quieter chair!

So while I prepare my next volume of “Little Visits”, enjoy listening to me read the stories about Kublai, Allegro, Fawn, Sally and Namir, starting with a view of my back yard this morning when all the leaves have turned yellow and are falling in the breeze.

The text I read is below so you can follow along or read at your leisure. There are a few minor differences where, when speaking, I found an easier way to say a few things than the way I’ve written them. I began my life with a number of speech difficulties for which I had years of speech therapy to resolve. Even today, though, I still stumble now and then over combinations of letters and words that will never be easy for me to pronounce. My natural workaround is to find an easier way to speak the same thing, on the fly, and I usually go with it.

And I hope, if you are grieving a loss, animal or human, that my stories bring you some comfort.

Little Visits video

For the days around the Feast of All Hallows, Samhain, the Day of the Dead and other celebrations of the dimming of the veil between this world and the next, I am sharing a trilogy of stories of visitations, the mysterious returns of my cats after they’d transitioned. None are scary, unless you’re afraid of something that isn’t physically there, but all include elements I can’t explain and only accept…and am glad to have experienced.
