Old guitar strings, the steel ones in particular, are amazing stuff. Either a plain carbon steel strand or one wrapped once, or twice, in a coil wire. Recently I removed some strings on a fretless bass guitar and replaced them with some that are wound on the outside in black nylon tape. Recommended move.
