Some 8.43 million Britons have purchased private medical insurance to escape their National Health Service. Under leading Medicare for All proposals, Americans would not have that option.

Medicare for All is back. Progressive candidates in Colorado and New York made single-payer healthcare central to their successful primary campaigns last month.

Before Americans embrace that vision, they should look at Britain.

After more than three years of strikes, resident doctors in Britain’s government-run National Health Service have accepted a pay deal. Salaries will now start at just over $53,000.

That should give pause to Americans tempted by Medicare for All. Single-payer wouldn’t merely replace private insurance with government insurance. It would give Washington enormous power over what physicians earn – and, by extension, the care patients receive.

Many doctors are drawn to the promise of fewer insurers, less paperwork, and lower administrative costs. But when government is effectively physicians’ only customer, it sets the price – and doctors must take it.
