Jaela pushed deeper into the throat of the cavern, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and ancient rot. Her torchlight revealed yellowed bones scattered along the floor. A massive web stretched along the tunnel wall, and at its center a gargantuan spider shifted, its multifaceted eyes glistening in the torchlight as it studied her. The creature chittered, its legs twitching, then retreated, dismissing her as too large for a meal.

The tribal elders had said this tomb was cursed, a place that brought only madness, but they were superstitious fossils, fools who couldn’t see the fortune right beneath their very noses.

She stepped over a fractured ribcage and into the central chamber. A colossal jaguar, carved from stone, loomed over the tomb. Its eyes, orbs of polished gold, seemed to track her every movement. But what caught her attention were the piles of gold and glistening jewels scattered across the floor. She gasped. There was more wealth here than she could spend in ten lifetimes of hedonistic greed.

At the center sat an ornate golden sarcophagus, its surface etched with scenes of primal slaughter. As she approached, she saw skeletons strewn across the chamber floor, some half-buried in gold. A cold wind brushed her skin, and she glanced up at the jaguar, hollow dread stirring in her chest.

Then it began. A heavy, rhythmic thumpthump… from within the sarcophagus.

Panic surged. The thumping came again, more violent this time. The latch rattled loose. The lid groaned and lifted slightly on one side, revealing the darkness within.

Jaela sprinted and threw herself onto the sarcophagus, forcing it shut with her weight. Horrified by what might emerge, she snatched an ornate dagger from a nearby pile and drove it through the latch, pinning it closed. The banging turned frantic. A muffled voice called out four unintelligible words, then trailed off into silence.

The threat contained, greed conquered her fear. She snatched up her bag and shoveled gems into it with shaking hands. I’ll be back for the rest.

A sudden, violent gust tore through the chamber, and the sarcophagus lid exploded open. Whispers swirled around her ears. From behind her came a chitinous skittering sound. Jaela spun and stepped back, her boot catching on a protruding skull.

She tumbled backward into the waiting darkness of the sarcophagus. The carved jaguar’s face was the last thing she saw before her head struck stone with a sharp crack.

The lid slammed shut with a reverberating boom.

Consciousness returned. Jaela found herself in a suffocating, pitch-black nightmare. She thrashed and reached out, searching for whatever creature had tried to escape before, but there was nothing there. She was alone.

She clawed and shoved at the underside of the lid, but it wouldn’t budge. The latch had sealed again. She hammered on the stone, thumpthump, the same rhythm she had heard before.

Her fists pounded until she heard a click. The latch rattled loose.

She pressed upward. The heavy lid lifted just enough for a sliver of torchlight to cut through the darkness.

Through the narrowing gap, she saw herself, torch in hand, eyes wide, her expression twisted in terror.

She watched as her double leapt forward and slammed the lid shut. She heard the familiar scrape of the ornate dagger sliding into place, locking her in.

Jaela hammered her fists against the stone one last time, screaming the four words she finally understood:

“Please! Let me out!”
