This book was hard to put down, but also hard to read. Hard in the sense that it was cruel: the characters, the environment, the story. A true horror story.

I wanted to find out what would happen next, but I thought all the characters were very flat. Very little character arc or emotional resonance with any of them.

Highlights

  • Going solely on photographs, historians in the next century might mistake her world for a happy place, just as she’d always assigned misery and hardship to the past, prejudiced by a few grim portraits. (Location 5201)
  • “So why suffer when you don’t have to?” Abigail leaned back in her chair. “For hundreds of years, that gold’s done nothing—nothing—but bring out the worst in people. (Location 5488)
  • It made misery and death. There isn’t even the smallest part of me that’s tempted to go back to that wilderness, into that mine, to get it. (Location 5489)
