Janet Patton · The Messy Middle by Belay Guidance

Welcome back to The Belay Library — your on-demand collection of expert guidance, built around the science of child personality and real-life parenting.

This post: the developmental stage behind almost every “why won’t they even try” moment with your pre-teen and what actually helps.

If this sounds like your pre-teen:

avoiding anything they’re not immediately good at,

giving up fast,

calling themselves bad at things,

refusing to even try.

You’re not imagining a pattern. You’re watching a real developmental stage play out.

Dr. Janet Patton points to developmental psychologist Erik Erikson’s Industry vs. Inferiority stage, which spans roughly ages 6 to 12. During this window, kids are working out whether they’re capable and building a sense of competence through accomplishment, initiative, and persistence.

When it goes well, that becomes confidence.

When it doesn’t, it can look a lot like fear of failure, avoidance, or a kid who’s decided they’re just “not good at” things.

Dr. Patton offers good news for this stage and things you can do to encourage confidence and bravery.

⚡ Quick Tips

Looking for a fast reminder? Here’s the short version.

Ever wonder how to help your pre-teen build confidence when they seem so worried about measuring up to others?

Things to Think About:

  • Help your child find activities they enjoy and can get better at

  • Praise their effort, not just results (”I love how you kept trying”)

  • Show them it’s okay to make mistakes and try again

  • Break big challenges into smaller, easier steps

Key Takeaways: Your pre-teen’s confidence grows not from winning or being the best, but from learning to keep going when things get tough. When you focus on their effort instead of perfect results, you help them build the strength they’ll need throughout life.
