Over the past decade, my work has unfolded as a journey back to ORIGINS — to the roots of cotton, to the artisans who continue to weave with ancestral knowledge, and to the traditions that give textiles their soul.
When I first encountered heirloom colored cotton in Guatemala, I was captivated. Cotton that grows not only white, but also in soft greens, dusty pink and warm browns — colors given by nature itself; something ancient and enduring. I wanted to understand it, to trace its story, and to work alongside the artisans who still keep these traditions alive.
That journey has become my compass. From sitting with growers in their fields to watching weavers at their backstrap looms, I’ve learned that cotton is not just a fiber, it is memory, landscape, and resilience woven together.
This September, I am honored to share the next chapter of that journey: ORIGINS, a new collection that will be available online on September 1, 2025.
Spread the word, it really helps a small brand like ours.
ORIGINS is woven entirely by hand in Mexico, using scarce batches of heirloom cotton. Because so few communities still cultivate this cotton, the supply is limited; meaning this collection exists in very small numbers. Only a handful of pieces will be available online, along with a few handpicked retailers who share a commitment to craftsmanship and sustainability.
Each textile carries the touch of the artisan who wove it, the rhythm of centuries-old techniques, and the subtle irregularities that remind us these pieces are alive. They are not fast, they are not mass-produced — they are meant to be lived with, slowly, over time.
For me, ORIGINS is more than a collection. It is a way of honoring the roots of cotton, of celebrating the artistry of Mexican weaving, and of reconnecting us to materials and stories that risk being forgotten.
Mark your calendars: September 1, 2025.
As a subscriber here, you’ll be the first to see and access the collection when it goes live. In the meantime, feel free to ask more information just answering this email.
Important information about shipping and taxes
All pieces from ORIGINS will be shipped directly from Mexico. With cotton grown in Mexico, weaving done by hand in Mexico, and finishing details — like zippers — from the United States, the collection qualifies for the USMCA Certification of Origin. We’ve done the work to comply, and it should mean no extra tariffs and other freaking taxes— though with regulations changing so quickly these days, we’ll keep monitoring everything closely.
We are still finalizing the logistics with our team in Mexico and will keep you updated as everything comes together.
Until then, if you’d like to inquire or reserve a piece in advance, feel free to reach me directly at maud@behindthehill.com or just answer this email.
