Less than four months before a federal ban on most hemp-derived THC products is scheduled to take effect, one of the nation’s largest grocery store operators entered the category with its first assortment of beverages. In mid-July, Albertsons-owned Jewel-Osco launched a limited selection of popular brands in just three Chicago stores out of its approximately 189 locations.

The move has precedent. Target entered the category with an 11-store pilot in Minnesota in October 2025. They clearly liked what they saw because by April 2026, distribution expanded statewide and just one month later, the retailer brought hemp beverages into more than 300 stores across Florida, Texas, and Illinois where permitted by local municipal ordinance. One of the country’s largest retailers saw enough early success to accelerate its investment despite the category’s uncertain regulatory outlook.

Given the recent declines in alcohol sales, the reasons to participate are clear. What wasn’t as obvious is Jewel-Osco’s timing. With the November deadline looming, my first reaction was, “Why not wait?” The more I thought about it, though, the more the pilot made sense. It offers a rare look at how a major grocery retailer weighs opportunity against uncertainty when evaluating an emerging beverage category.
