Earlier this week, I wrote an essay for Vogue (thank you for reading!). In it, I reflected on specific scent memories from my life: the subtle vanilla smell of animal crackers in a Dixie cup, my post-naptime snack in preschool; my first film set, True Grit, which smelled like hay bales and horse feed; the rose gardens in Montecido that we walked through on our wedding day, eyes welling with happy tears.
Through working with Estée Lauder on Glimmer — which I can’t wait for you to smell! — I’ve been reminded of how powerful scent is. We all carry these unique, personal scent stories with us: they get encoded in our DNA. So in today’s letter, I thought it would be fun to go a little deeper and share my own scent timeline: a chronological map of the important and meaningful moments, places, and people in my life and the smells I connect to them.

MY SCENT MEMORY TIMELINE: 1999-2026
Preschool smells like: This is one of my earliest scent memories: I’m holding a waxy paper Dixie cup up to my nose, and it’s filled with exactly four animal crackers.
Recess smells like: A freshly inflated basketball bouncing off the hardwood floor, rubber sneakers screeching.
An audition room smells like: Fear! Fear and anxiety. Ha!
The set of True Grit smells like: Hay bales and horses.
A red carpet smells like: Hairspray, specifically the kind you can only get in Europe. Every hairstylist I’ve ever worked with says it’s the best.
A recording studio smells like: Usually incense.
Summer vacation smells like: Humid air and clear, glassy lake water. It sounds like The Eagles.
My mom smells like: My mom…but her first perfume was actually this Estée Lauder fragrance from the ‘80s.
Hawaii smells like: Plumeria.
Christmas smells like: Freshly baked sugar cookies, pine, and homemade hot chocolate with toasted marshmallow on the rim.
A sound stage smells like: Padded walls and equipment. Game time.
The set of Dickinson smells like: New York City.
New York City smells like: Beautiful chaos! The steam escaping the potholes mixed with the fish from the sushi shop and the coffee from the cafe right next door.
Love smells like: Josh.
My engagement day smells like: Humid air, ocean, the kind of air that leaves your hair with the perfect touch of frizz. (And champagne bubbles.)
My wedding day smells like: Rose gardens, lemons, and bougainvillea — which are scentless, fun fact, but are so pretty and everywhere in Montecito where we got married.
Early mornings smell like: Ginger tea with honey.
My baby smells like: Everything. She’s indescribable perfection.
Glimmer smells like: I’ve always described perfume in terms of feelings. This one feels like me. It has a note of rose, which I love, but it’s not your typical rose scent because right behind it there’s a sweet vanilla richness that’s kind of addictive.
