Hello, I’m Mark, the creator of the Brother Beastus blog, and this is Behind the Scenes.

I care about BDSMLR—not just because it’s one of the platforms for the Brother Beastus blog but also because it can be a valuable community internet resource.

About a quarter of my blog’s followers are on the BDSMLR platform. (The rest are on Tumblr and Substack.)

BDSMLR has had a lot of technical trouble since late January. The site announced a planned maintenance outage for “3 to 4 hours” on 30 January 2021, and 8 weeks later it still hasn’t fully recovered. It has been hard to get any information about when the site will be fully fixed (if ever) and who is leading the effort. The people who run BDSMLR have never revealed themselves.

I’m on the BDSMLR bug report email list, and it was recently revealed there that BDSMLR has been for sale since last June. They are reportedly asking $7M to $9M for the site.

All this uncertainty leads to a lack of confidence in the site. As a result, many people are apparently leaving the site. I haven’t decided what I will do, but I am leaning towards ending my involvement with the platform.
