I think a lot about nostalgia in food. Recently I had a video go a bit viral about a bean Oreo milkshake, in which the internet decided that I must have never had an Oreo before.

Over the weekend, I returned to Los Angeles, to my parents’ house. The house where I spent my childhood eating out of Barbie Plastic Tupperware that were filled with microwavable Annie’s mac and cheese and had a pantry filled with Oreos, double stuffed, single stuffed, but always classic.

I wasn’t always a bean girl in upbringing, I lived a life of Flamin’ Hot Cheeto taste offs with my best friend, pints of Ben and Jerry’s (but only during ice cream season- the time where the ice cream sales were highest and the coupons were biggest), and a healthy dose of Feast From the East Chinese Chicken Salad, no chicken, extra crunchies, and Bigg Chill Vanilla Custard Frozen yogurt.

Nostalgia in food is an interesting thing, there are scents and sensations we remember and crave to be reunited with once again, and those that we would be thrilled to never look in the eye again (I’m looking at you Lemon Luna Bar).

This weekend I was feeling nostalgia, and decided to make my parents a classic food from my childhood, but rather than no chicken extra crunchies, the Feast from the East Salad got a bean supporter makeover, because, well sometimes I can’t help myself.

Happy National Chickpea Day!

Make some of my favorite Chickpea Recipes:
Crispy Buffalo Chickpea
Miso Maple Dark Chocolate Chickpea Blondies
Teriyaki's Glow Up: Sweet and Spicy Chickpeas
Lemon Feta Chickpeas
Beanut Butter Cups
Chickpea Gnocchi, Chickpea Cereal, and So Many More

Or my new favorite:
Chinese Chickpea Salad:
Inspired by Feast From the East, but far better for your body and the planet. Count it as Earth Day and National Chickpea Day in one.
