1. Submit Early — Timing Is Everything
Don’t wait until the last minute. Upload your music to your distributor at least 4 weeks before release day—6 weeks is even better. This gives enough time for DSPs (like Spotify or Apple Music) and playlist editors to process, review, and consider your track.
2. Craft a Real Marketing Plan (Not Just “Get on a Playlist”)
A playlist placement is not a marketing strategy. Outline clear goals for your release, define your brand, and identify your ideal audience. Figure out how you’ll promote your music across platforms and through media coverage.
3. Start Creating Buzz Before You Pitch
Begin executing your marketing plan well before the release drops. Post about it on social media, tease content, engage your followers, and start reaching out for press. The more attention you generate, the better your pitch will land.
4. Keep Your Distributor in the Loop
Your distributor can advocate for your music—but only if they know what’s happening. Let them know about any press, social growth, or milestones you’ve achieved. Show them you're serious about your career and have momentum building.
5. Polish Your Artist Profile
Playlist curators will check out your artist page. Make sure your bio is up-to-date, your photos are high quality, and your profile includes links to merch, tour dates, and any playlists you’ve personally curated. Make it easy for curators to see your potential.
6. Submit a Playlist Pitch on Your DSP (Especially Spotify)
If you use Spotify for Artists, submit your upcoming track through their editorial pitch tool. Be thoughtful and detailed—describe the vibe, story behind the song, collaborators, and promotional plans. Don’t skip this step!
7. Stay Consistent and Follow Up
Even if a track doesn’t get playlisted right away, consistency pays off. Keep building your brand, dropping great music, and engaging your audience. Over time, DSPs will start to take notice of your growth and professionalism.
