At Legacy Lab, we're all about setting you up for success. Dropping new music isn't just about hitting “upload”—it's about strategy. Let’s walk through how to prepare for a release that gets real traction.
Step 1: Plan Ahead (4-6 Weeks Before Release)
Before locking in a release date, make sure your master audio and album artwork are finalized. Releasing on Fridays is ideal since it boosts your chances of landing on playlists. To give DSPs (like Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal) enough time to process your submission and consider playlisting it, aim for at least four weeks of lead time—but six weeks is even better.
At this stage, start submitting marketing drivers to your distributor. These are key promotional assets that help editorial teams understand your release and determine whether it’s playlist-worthy. Some examples include:
Social media engagement
Music videos
Spotify pre-saves and playlist adds
Press features & interviews
Upcoming tour dates
Submit your track to your distributor (DistroKid, TuneCore, Symphonic, etc.) now, and gather your marketing assets to send their way.
If you're planning a listening event, now is the time to secure a venue and media partners for a premiere. You should also start working on a pre-save and pre-sale campaign to build anticipation.
Step 2: Spread the Word (3 Weeks Before Release)
Now that your track is scheduled, it’s time to get loud! Share your pre-save and pre-sale links across all social platforms and invite fans to support your release.
This is also when you should:
Get influencers, friends, and fans involved in spreading the word
Submit your track to Spotify for Artists to increase the chances of landing on algorithmic playlists
Lock in any press coverage or interviews
Step 3: Build Momentum (2 Weeks Before Release)
Two weeks out, focus on consistency in your promotion. Post regularly about your upcoming drop, tease snippets, and engage with fans to keep the hype building.
You should also:
Confirm media premieres (blogs, radio stations, YouTube channels, etc.)
Finalize plans for your listening event
Keep reminding people to pre-save the track
Step 4: Release Week – Make It Count!
It’s almost time! The week of your release, ramp up your promo efforts and lock in premiere spots. Whether it’s a media blog post, a radio debut, or a YouTube premiere, you want as much visibility as possible on release day.
Day of Release – Go All In!
Post everywhere: Share your track across social media with a clear call to action—stream, download, and share!
Engage with your audience: Thank supporters, repost fan content, and tag DSPs that feature your track.
Leverage TikTok & Reels: A simple challenge or user-generated content campaign can boost your song’s reach organically.
Post-Release: Keep the Momentum Going
Just because your track is out doesn’t mean promotion stops. Keep posting, engage with your audience, and consider running a fan-driven campaign to keep streams and engagement up.
