I grew up reading Robert Kimball to learn more about all of the songwriters I most admired — Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, Rodgers and Hart. I finally met him over our shared love of Eubie Blake, whose music and existence, Robert almost single-handedly rescued (abetted by his co-writer, the all-American composer, William Bolcom), with their book, REMINISCING WITH SISSLE AND BLAKE — the most important book written about American popular music in my lifetime:
My obituary for Robert appears in today’s Times. Inexorably, he and I now together become part of the historical cycle of memory that we both long adhered to so avidly.
