For years I believed the next opportunity would change my life.

The next business.

The next book.

The next course.

The next promotion.

The next shiny idea.

I wasn’t really looking for a business.

I was looking for a version of me that I hadn’t built yet.

Years ago, when I was involved in Network Marketing, someone said something that made perfect sense...

But I didn’t understand it.

They said,

“Your business will only grow to the level you grow.”

I nodded.

Pretended I understood.

I hadn’t a clue what they actually meant.

I thought they were talking about learning more.

Reading more books.

Buying more courses.

Finding a better strategy.

Looking back now...

I realise they weren’t talking about the business at all.

They were talking about me.

No matter what opportunity I found...

The same Barry kept showing up.

The shy one.

The introvert.

The one who wanted to change his life...

...without anyone noticing.

I wanted extraordinary results...

Using ordinary actions.

I wanted confidence...

Without doing anything that required courage.

I wanted people to read my work...

Without ever putting myself in front of them.

Looking back...

That was impossible.

Here’s the picture that comes into my head now.

Imagine handing a Formula One car to a toddler.

The car isn’t the problem.

The driver is.

You could give that child the fastest machine on Earth...

It wouldn’t matter.

They simply aren’t ready to drive it.

For years I kept blaming the car.

Maybe I needed a better business.

Maybe I needed another course.

Maybe I needed a different niche.

Maybe I needed another strategy.

I never stopped to ask whether I was the problem sitting behind the wheel.

The strange thing is...

None of those businesses really failed.

They exposed me.

They showed me every place where I was hiding.

Every excuse.

Every comfort zone.

Every fear of being seen.

Every ounce of self-doubt.

Every time I wanted success...

Without becoming the person capable of carrying it.

That’s what I’ve realised over the years.

Growth isn’t collecting knowledge.

Growth is doing uncomfortable things until they stop feeling uncomfortable.

Recording the first video.

Publishing the first post.

Showing your face.

Speaking your opinion.

Taking action before confidence arrives.

That’s how you grow.

Looking back at my early videos now...

They’re awful.

Awkward.

Stiff.

I can see the old Barry trying not to be seen.

Trying not to say the wrong thing.

Trying not to attract criticism.

Now?

I’m not talking at the camera anymore.

I’m trying to put a piece of myself through the screen.

That’s a completely different person.

Sometimes people ask what business they should start.

I think that’s the wrong question.

The better question is...

Who are you becoming while you’re building it?

Because if you become more courageous...

More consistent...

More willing to be seen...

You won’t just build one business.

You’ll become someone capable of building almost anything.

Here’s something that really hit me while thinking about this.

If someone had handed the Barry from ten years ago...

...my books...

...this Substack...

...my YouTube channel...

...my audience...

He would have lost it.

Not because the opportunities weren’t good enough.

Because he wasn’t ready for them.

He still wanted to stay invisible.

He still wanted extraordinary results without extraordinary discomfort.

That version of me needed changing first.

The business came second.

Maybe that’s where you are today.

Still searching for the next opportunity.

Still hoping the next course...

The next book...

The next idea...

Will finally change everything.

Maybe it will.

But only if you change with it.

Because wherever you go...

There you are.

And until the person behind the steering wheel changes...

It doesn’t matter how good the car is.

Action for today:

Forget searching for a better opportunity.

Ask yourself one uncomfortable question instead:

“What kind of person would naturally succeed at the life I want?”

Then spend today becoming a little more like them.

One uncomfortable action at a time.
