The Day You Stop Believing Yourself

Barry J McDonald · The Reignitor 🔥

There comes a point where the biggest liar in your life...

...isn’t someone else.

It’s you.

Not because you’re a bad person.

Because you’ve broken the same promise to yourself so many times...

...you stop believing your own voice.

“I’ll start Monday.”

“I’ll get fitter.”

“I’ll write the book.”

“I’ll build the business.”

“I’ll finally change my life.”

You say it.

You almost believe it.

Then Monday becomes next Monday.

Next month.

Next year.

And after a while something strange happens.

You stop trusting yourself.

Looking back, I don’t think I lost confidence.

I lost self-trust.

There’s a difference.

Confidence is vague.

Nobody knows how much confidence they’re supposed to have.

Five percent?

Fifty percent?

Ninety-five?

It’s impossible to measure.

But trust?

Trust is obvious.

Either you believe someone keeps their word...

...or you don’t.

The problem was...

The person I trusted least...

...was me.

For years I kept promising myself I was going to change my life.

One day I’d write books.

One day I’d build a business.

One day I’d stop letting life drift past me.

Deep down...

I knew I was lying.

Not because those dreams were impossible.

Because I wasn’t doing anything about them.

Then something changed.

Not overnight.

Not dramatically.

I started keeping one tiny promise.

My writing.

Just showing up.

Getting my word count done.

Some days I loved it.

Some days I didn’t.

But I kept turning up.

Looking back...

The writing didn’t change me first.

Keeping the promise did.

Here’s something I’ve realised.

Anyone can work when they’re motivated.

The days that matter are the ones you don’t want to do it.

Those are the days that quietly ask a question:

“Can I trust this person?”

Every time you keep your word...

Your answer is yes.

Every time you don’t...

Your brain quietly files another piece of evidence.

That’s why I think small promises matter more than huge goals.

Big goals are exciting.

Small promises change identities.

Anyone can announce they’ll run a marathon this year.

Far fewer people quietly walk every morning for ten minutes.

One sounds impressive.

The other builds someone you can rely on.

I used to think goals built confidence.

Now I think promises build trust.

And trust builds confidence.

That’s the order.

One thing I’ve noticed about myself...

On the hard days...

The days I didn’t want to write...

The days the words wouldn’t come...

Those are the days I’m proudest of now.

Not because the work was better.

Because I proved something to myself.

I wasn’t becoming someone who quit.

I’ve always liked putting an X on the calendar.

Nobody else sees it.

Nobody congratulates me.

But I know it’s there.

It’s proof that today didn’t disappear.

Proof that I kept my word.

Proof that today mattered.

One little X.

One more vote for the person I’m trying to become.

Maybe that’s the real danger of saying,

“I’ll do it tomorrow.”

You’re not delaying the work.

You’re quietly creating someone who can’t believe their own promises anymore.

That identity is built one broken promise at a time.

Just like a stronger identity is built...

...one kept promise at a time.

If I could leave you with one thought today, it would be this:

Don’t try to impress yourself with a huge goal.

Earn your own trust with a tiny promise.

Because every promise you keep to yourself says exactly the same thing:

“I can rely on this person.”

And that’s where confidence really begins.
