Flash: Democratic Socialist Gets Nod In Florida Primary

In Tuesday’s primary nomination races in Florida Democratic socialist Angie Nixon won a surprise victory for the US Senate competition in November.

The progressive beat former army intelligence officer Alexander Vindman.

She spent less that $1-million on her campaign, compared to Vindman’s $16-million+.

Nixon ended up handily winning with more than 55 percent of the vote. She is now positioned to campaign against veteran GOP Sen. Ashley Moody.

After her win Nixon told supporters that they had sent “shockwaves” to the Washington establishment:

“And they better get ready. When we realize that we are each other, we are not each other’s enemies, and that we are all struggling.”

Nixon campaigned on progressive policies like free childcare and a national rent freeze. She got help from national progressives like Democratic Reps. Maxwell Frost of Florida, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts.

Polls project, however ,that the Republican incumbent would win against either Democrat, so she has a lot of work to do in the coming months to secure a victory.

Nixon’s fellow Democrats are already rallying around her flag. Vindman praised Nixon in a post on Tuesday night after the race was called, saying she “ran a strong campaign…I will be standing by her side.” National Democratic leaders praised Nixon’s victory, with Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader, and Kirsten Gillibrand, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee chair, commented on her background as a former union organizer, saying she had “dedicated her career to fighting for Florida”.

Establishment Democrats won in the other Florida Democratic nomination races last night – but to have even one progressive win in conservative Florida is a surprising event.

On the Republican side of the nominee races, two candidates endorsed by Trump, scandal-plagued Rep. Cory Mills and former administration official Catalina Lauf, lost their bids for Congress.
