Hossam el-Hamalawy · State & Barracks

This week’s issue covers the Egyptian army’s strikes against Sudanese miners, rising motorcycle deaths, abuses against Sudanese refugees, the Shia crackdown, deaths in custody, the Regeni trial in Rome, the joint military drills with the Turkish Air Force, arms imports, and an Israeli firm’s move to acquire energy assets in Egypt.

I’m pleased to share that my chapter, “Sometimes with the Islamists, Never with the State!” The Egyptian Left and the Question of Islamism, has been published in the open-access volume Radical Encounters: Islamists and Leftists in the Middle East and North Africa (1960s-2010s), edited by Laura Guazzone and Rossana Tufaro. The chapter revisits the uneasy history of encounters between Egyptian leftists and Islamists, examining the tactical convergences, fierce disputes, and strategic dilemmas that shaped opposition politics under authoritarian rule.
